Outing, food, and yay photos!

Finally, got round to making this post! Went out like… two weeks ago with my sis and her friends to celebrate her bday… and I snapped some photos! Her bday is on the 3rd of Jan, right after the new day, so the christmas decorations were still around! And there’s the Orchard road (premium shopping street in SG) pedestrian night too. It’s a trial that’s underway, where they close the road once a month on the first Saturday of the year to well, let you roam the streets. It was kinda… pathetic though IMO. There were some random performances here and there, a stage, with a very noisy MC. And is was pretty crowded with tourists and Singaporean alike… but the whole atmosphere was lacking. The street performers were still by the sidewalks, as they always were, because they are not license/authorised to perform in the middle of the road. It’s a once a month, 6 hour event, so they didn’t think of setting up stalls in the middle of the road. Some snack stalls and such would certainly give the whole place a more… carnival, festive atmosphere. Thankfully the Christmas lights were still up so we had something to see on this occasion. But otherwise? Kinda disappointing. There’s so much more that could have been done really. And considering how much SG depends on tourism to survive, the Singapore tourism board really should have done better.

Okays. Without further ado, photos!

2015 01 03 14 25 13We meet up for lunch at this Japanese-French restaurant in Plaza Singapura. Hashing Coffee as you can see from the pic. Thankfully there wasn’t any queue when we arrived. The food was superb!

2015 01 03 13 08 23Curry pot. Delicious!

2015 01 03 13 09 50Lobster bisque spaghetti. Oh the lobster bisque. Heavenly! It was really mouthfuls of lobster!

2015 01 03 13 10 54Finally the fuwa phew souffle rice! Well you can’t really tell from this pic but...

2015 01 03 13 10 462015 01 03 13 11 09

Yes the souffle has risen a lot! I ate at miam miam before, also a Japanese-French restaurant serving souffle dishes… and the souffle only rose like… half the height of this one. What’s more, the service at this restaurant is excellent. The chef (a Japanese), I’m guessing he’s the owner, serves the dishes personally. He seemed pretty amused that both me and my sister exclaimed ‘sugeii!’ in unison when this was served.

As there was only three of us, we only ordered three main dish.

What about dessert you ask? We went to another shop!

2015 01 03 15 15 46Too many good food, too little $$$, and too little stomach space. This was from Nana’s Green Tea, also in Plaza Singapura. I ordered the hojicha with hojicha ice cream and mochi balls. That’s the main drink shown in the above pic.

2015 01 03 15 15 51Then there was the green tea latte with soft serve ice cream.

2015 01 03 15 16 06And finally the sweet potato parfait. Sweet potato is like, their special ingredient of the month, and they had various sweet potato desserts.

2015 01 03 18 35 33A quick peak at the pedestrian night at Orchard road. It’s not that late yet, maybe just after 6pm (the event starts at 6pm). But as you can see, it’s CROWDED!

2015 01 03 18 35 372015 01 03 18 36 02 HDR2015 01 03 18 50 13We met up with more of my sis’s friends and went to far east plaza for dinner. It used to be our old hangout in secondary school. Cos our sec school (yes, they are all my juniors) is just like, a 15 mins walk away. There used to be loads of hip shops for teens, but seems like a lot of the shops have closed down and are vacant now. And with my sec sch moving to a new location in idk how many year’s time (the news first came out like 5 years ago or something?), this place is gonna end up pretty dead after the move.

2015 01 03 19 01 00Saveur, french for dinner!

2015 01 03 19 10 03Saveur’s pasta, which used to be called angel’s hair no the menu. Delicious. And cheap.

2015 01 03 19 13 47Cappuccino? Nope! It’s mushroom soup!

2015 01 03 19 25 55The best dish in Saveur, as I’ve been told by numerous people, is the duck confit. It tastes like the Chinese 金华火腿, or jinghua ham, but it doesn’t make the dish any less delicious. Best of all the prizes at Saveur are really affordable. I can’t stress that enough.

2015 01 03 20 30 05Dessert! Their dessert menu changes every month, I’m told. This time it was pandan flavoured crème brûlée and pistachio panna cotta.

2015 01 03 21 04 51A pretty signboard at the restaurant.

2015 01 03 21 20 50Pedestrian night at Orchard… the promotion banner.

2015 01 03 21 21 09We went out and walked a little on the road once more after dinner. But there was really nothing much to do. And it was just a really small stretch of road that was closed so…

2015 01 03 21 34 07They placed chairs in the middle of the road for people to take photos.

2015 01 03 21 34 48A pretty Christmas tree in front of the paragon shopping centre.

2015 01 03 21 35 582015 01 03 21 36 06Some Christmas decos that were still hanging.

2015 01 03 21 48 102015 01 03 21 49 54Random photos of random shopping centres along Orchard. The road closure isn’t in effect on this stretch of the road.

2015 01 03 21 50 18Well the exterior is quite pretty… though the tall trees are kinda blocking.

2015 01 03 21 52 09Inside orchard central. It was pretty late then, all the shops have closed.

2015 01 03 21 52 40Again, at the basement of Orchard central. Quite a pretty decoration.

2015 01 03 21 53 18The long corridor to the toilet...

2015 01 03 21 53 51That never fails to amuse me.

2015 01 03 22 02 21A really tall sculpture in the shopping centre. It’s supposed to be of a lady holding two shopping bags.

And that was all! It was what… 10, almost 11pm by this time? Pretty much all the shops have closed already so we headed home right after.

We had a mini bday celebration at home the day after…

2015 01 04 11 52 08Mum got some frozen crabs back from my gran (a fishmonger). She wanted to make like… crab soup? with it and got me to help. It turned out… quite a failure though. This crab isn’t really suitable for making soup. The taste is pretty blend. It should have been steamed instead.

2015 01 04 13 21 53Still… I tried my best to make the ramen crab soup!

2015 01 04 13 21 58Then well. My mum helped and ended up kinda… making a mess? She added too much fish stock, so there goes all the crab flavour… :X

2015 01 04 13 22 082015 01 04 13 22 11Mum got turkey drumstick from the supermarket. We tried a turkey leg in Harbin too, but this was nicer. Not so dry and more tender.

2015 01 04 14 12 58And what’s a bday w/o a cake right? A ska cake for my sis! :)

And that’s all the bday related photos! That’s all for now! Till next time! Now it’s time to head to bed!

Food and movies!

So Monday was holiday in lieu of National day, and I went to watch Conan movie with my sis… and then we found out that they are airing Kenshin movie in sg toooooo! And I’ve been super hyped up about the Kenshin movie even though I’ve not watched the 1st movie yet… But yup, I’ve downloaded the 1st movie to my comm already! That’s one more item to my To-Watch list!

2014 08 11 12 27 36

2014 08 11 12 27 41Lunch was at Charboton. We both ordered the same thing. Cos we both love tonkotsu soup base… well my sis ordered the ‘spicy’ one, so it came with that little ball of ‘spicy’ minced meat… but really it was hardly spicy at all. She added a ton of shichimi powder and chilli oil… whereas I just prefer my noodles in their original taste. It was good, and the price was very affordable too. The total bill came up to just over 30 bucks. We had initially wanted to eat at the Kiseki buffet place… but we totally forgot that I wasn’t the only one who got an off day on Monday. It was freaking crowded. There was a HUGE queue even for those who made reservations…. Which we didn’t do. No reservations? An estimated 1.5 hours of waiting time. And we reached there shortly after their opening hour. Seriously…!

2014 08 11 13 26 09Spanish donuts! Yum yum yum!

2014 08 11 13 26 14Very nicely fried and it came with three sauces. White, milk, and dark chocolate. I loved the white choc dip the most. Very milky.

2014 08 11 18 35 08DINNER! We went to sushi tie. The most expensive meal of the day, (tho if we went for the buffet it would have cost the same) but it was really worth it. YUM YUM YUM. Anyway, that’s the deep fried ika. They have some fanciful name for it… hanasaki ika i think? But well, the batter is very crispy and light. Love it! Went went there last time and ordered this dish too.

2014 08 11 18 35 18I think they put (prawn?) roe in the batter… hence those red bits… never examined them closely to determine what they are even though it was the 2nd time I’m eating this dish hahaha.

2014 08 11 18 40 13Salmon ikura don. Just look at the amount of salmon roe! Fantastic! Ahhh *drools*. Almost 20 bucks (well would be 20 bucks and more with the GST and service charge) but the roe is just fantastic!

2014 08 11 18 40 24Ooooo the sushi. I only ordered three types. From left to right, wagyu beef, whelk, and swordfish. We ate the beef last… cos the taste ought to be the strongest. The beef was kinda normal. It felt like eating ham… it was slightly seared as you can see from the pic, and some parts were still uncooked, so the texture was weird. The fatty parts of the raw meat, esp cos its still cold, kinda felt like the fat from lamb/beef chop after it hardens when cooled. When technically it IS the same thing… it was interesting and something we’ve not tried before, but I won’t feel the urge to try it again. The swordfish was  good. Fresh, and oily, with fat that is blended evenly into the flesh, and it melts in your mouth when eating. But in the end it was the whelk that we had first that was most memorable. It’s a regular priced item too (the beef was most expensive out of the three, and the swordfish is priced in between.) Very crunchy, very refreshing. I’m not sure if it’s because summer is apparently the season for whelks (they have whelks from somewhere in their summer promotion menu) or anything… but I’m definitely going to order this again next time! Love the crunchiness and the firm meat.

2014 08 11 18 40 43Ah this. On the summer promotion menu. 7 bucks for 5. I just could not resist ordering it and gosh I’m glad I did. Hotaru Ika. Firefly squid. It looks normal right? But gosh, the taste! And the texture. Very smooth, and silky. And inside the squid body. Its filled with… roe like stuff? I have no idea what that is (nope not squid ink), but it’s red and looks and taste like the stuff in prawn heads. Like in raw amaebis. It soooo makes me want to go back to sushi tei again before the summer promotion ends JUST to eat this thing. I never knew squid could taste this good!

2014 08 11 18 41 09Finally, a ‘classic’. Negitoro don. Spring onion and minced tuna rice with an onsen egg on top. You mix it all up before eating. Its delicious, and cheap too. Just above 10 bucks. We used to go sushi tei just for this… (well we only went like, twice or something, not very frequent). Well it’s the cheapest and more affordable thing on the menu after all… This dish started my addiction for raw/half boil eggs. Hahaha. Love the runny, fragrant egg yolk. Love how it makes this dish all sticky when mixed in… delicious!

2014 08 11 18 41 23A final photo of the meal. All the food lined up and ready to go! XD

Hai. And that’s all for Monday’s lovely sushi dinner. We ate at sushi express on Tuesday, but that’s just a regular sushi place, hence no pictures. Only high class sushi gets pictures hahaha! But sushi express was nice too. Cheap and good. I ate till I was soooo bloated! It’s a converter belt sushi place that came from Taiwan, and each plate of sushi/sashimi/whatever only costs $1.50. (In contrast, the cheapest sushis at sushi tei, like the whelk, costs $3.20!) Its our most frequented sushi place now, hence the lack of photos...

That’s all for now!
