Food and movies!

So Monday was holiday in lieu of National day, and I went to watch Conan movie with my sis… and then we found out that they are airing Kenshin movie in sg toooooo! And I’ve been super hyped up about the Kenshin movie even though I’ve not watched the 1st movie yet… But yup, I’ve downloaded the 1st movie to my comm already! That’s one more item to my To-Watch list!

2014 08 11 12 27 36

2014 08 11 12 27 41Lunch was at Charboton. We both ordered the same thing. Cos we both love tonkotsu soup base… well my sis ordered the ‘spicy’ one, so it came with that little ball of ‘spicy’ minced meat… but really it was hardly spicy at all. She added a ton of shichimi powder and chilli oil… whereas I just prefer my noodles in their original taste. It was good, and the price was very affordable too. The total bill came up to just over 30 bucks. We had initially wanted to eat at the Kiseki buffet place… but we totally forgot that I wasn’t the only one who got an off day on Monday. It was freaking crowded. There was a HUGE queue even for those who made reservations…. Which we didn’t do. No reservations? An estimated 1.5 hours of waiting time. And we reached there shortly after their opening hour. Seriously…!

2014 08 11 13 26 09Spanish donuts! Yum yum yum!

2014 08 11 13 26 14Very nicely fried and it came with three sauces. White, milk, and dark chocolate. I loved the white choc dip the most. Very milky.

2014 08 11 18 35 08DINNER! We went to sushi tie. The most expensive meal of the day, (tho if we went for the buffet it would have cost the same) but it was really worth it. YUM YUM YUM. Anyway, that’s the deep fried ika. They have some fanciful name for it… hanasaki ika i think? But well, the batter is very crispy and light. Love it! Went went there last time and ordered this dish too.

2014 08 11 18 35 18I think they put (prawn?) roe in the batter… hence those red bits… never examined them closely to determine what they are even though it was the 2nd time I’m eating this dish hahaha.

2014 08 11 18 40 13Salmon ikura don. Just look at the amount of salmon roe! Fantastic! Ahhh *drools*. Almost 20 bucks (well would be 20 bucks and more with the GST and service charge) but the roe is just fantastic!

2014 08 11 18 40 24Ooooo the sushi. I only ordered three types. From left to right, wagyu beef, whelk, and swordfish. We ate the beef last… cos the taste ought to be the strongest. The beef was kinda normal. It felt like eating ham… it was slightly seared as you can see from the pic, and some parts were still uncooked, so the texture was weird. The fatty parts of the raw meat, esp cos its still cold, kinda felt like the fat from lamb/beef chop after it hardens when cooled. When technically it IS the same thing… it was interesting and something we’ve not tried before, but I won’t feel the urge to try it again. The swordfish was  good. Fresh, and oily, with fat that is blended evenly into the flesh, and it melts in your mouth when eating. But in the end it was the whelk that we had first that was most memorable. It’s a regular priced item too (the beef was most expensive out of the three, and the swordfish is priced in between.) Very crunchy, very refreshing. I’m not sure if it’s because summer is apparently the season for whelks (they have whelks from somewhere in their summer promotion menu) or anything… but I’m definitely going to order this again next time! Love the crunchiness and the firm meat.

2014 08 11 18 40 43Ah this. On the summer promotion menu. 7 bucks for 5. I just could not resist ordering it and gosh I’m glad I did. Hotaru Ika. Firefly squid. It looks normal right? But gosh, the taste! And the texture. Very smooth, and silky. And inside the squid body. Its filled with… roe like stuff? I have no idea what that is (nope not squid ink), but it’s red and looks and taste like the stuff in prawn heads. Like in raw amaebis. It soooo makes me want to go back to sushi tei again before the summer promotion ends JUST to eat this thing. I never knew squid could taste this good!

2014 08 11 18 41 09Finally, a ‘classic’. Negitoro don. Spring onion and minced tuna rice with an onsen egg on top. You mix it all up before eating. Its delicious, and cheap too. Just above 10 bucks. We used to go sushi tei just for this… (well we only went like, twice or something, not very frequent). Well it’s the cheapest and more affordable thing on the menu after all… This dish started my addiction for raw/half boil eggs. Hahaha. Love the runny, fragrant egg yolk. Love how it makes this dish all sticky when mixed in… delicious!

2014 08 11 18 41 23A final photo of the meal. All the food lined up and ready to go! XD

Hai. And that’s all for Monday’s lovely sushi dinner. We ate at sushi express on Tuesday, but that’s just a regular sushi place, hence no pictures. Only high class sushi gets pictures hahaha! But sushi express was nice too. Cheap and good. I ate till I was soooo bloated! It’s a converter belt sushi place that came from Taiwan, and each plate of sushi/sashimi/whatever only costs $1.50. (In contrast, the cheapest sushis at sushi tei, like the whelk, costs $3.20!) Its our most frequented sushi place now, hence the lack of photos...

That’s all for now!

Updates and a million things

Oh a hilarious thing happened at work yesterday. One of the lab managers sent out an email asking people to clear their benches, and she posted photos of the ‘minimum’ standard lab benches should have. And I was like ‘did she post my bench?’, and lo and behold she did! Only then did I realise that… that wasn’t my official bench! My assigned bench is somewhere else, covered full of random stuff used by other people in my group. Hahahah. I wasn’t assigned any bench when I started, so I just cleared my supervisor’s bench and ‘declared’ it as my own because he doesn’t use the space at all anyway. So his bench is all nice and neat. And then today I went out with that manager for lunch and she was like ‘wait that photo! I thought it was your bench because you were always using it!’ Me: I am! Her: ‘Then I remembered your bench was at the edge!’ Me: Yes! I was like damn it, but that’s not my official bench! Her: ‘Just swap the name tags! Swap it!’
Hahahahhaa! We had quite a laugh for a while about it! XD

Its photo spam time!

Last week we had a long weekend… Monday was a public holiday so 3 days off instead of two!

2014 07 27 14 22 14 1Went to orchard on Sunday and we had dinner at sushi express… but the only photo I snapped was of these cute threesome XD

Monday we had lunch with my granny at a Hokkien restaurant. My treat. And it was surprising cheap. Much cheaper than Poulet even though there was one more of us. And the food was really good too! I took more photos this time… XD

2014 07 28 11 57 04The restaurant entrance. It’s located in a shophouse in Chinatown.

2014 07 28 12 12 01We started off with 羹汤, or thick soup. Nope this is not sharks fin soup. But it tastes really great. Dried fish maw, crab meat, chicken, mushroom… that’s what I remember of the ingredients.

2014 07 28 12 19 47We ordered noodles, 五香 (meat paste wrapped in bean curd skin and fried), 虾饺 (similarly, a meat paste wrapped in bean curd skin and deep friend, but with prawn added, and this one is cut into smaller pieces, whereas the first is one long roll) - this dish is mostly gone by the time I took this pic, only 1 prawn ball + loads of veggie left, and 蚝煎 (oysters with fried egg) - the main dish in the foreground. The Fried egg + oysters + flour was really, really nice! The flour + egg mixture was fried to a crisp! Very delicious!

2014 07 28 12 29 20Braised pork belly in a steamed bun! The steamed bun is really soft and fluffy! Very delicious!

2014 07 28 12 29 25That’s the slices of pork belly.

Hmm that’s all of the photos from that restaurant… but moving on…

2014 07 29 20 20 582014 07 29 20 21 12Silver champaign favoured haagen daz. I prefer the gold coloured one though! It looks nicer! Hahaha. This also tastes good too. I’ll take haagen daz anytime baby! Anytime, any flavour! XD

2014 07 30 17 38 33Oooo what have we here? Photos of my work place! Well a look out from the building that is! Photo taking is not allowed in the labs - lab managers are exempt from the rule though? I often get mails with photos of complains about XX waste not being cleared from XX part of the lab. Hahaha! But now that’s a different story altogether.

2014 07 30 17 38 40Anyway… it rained heavily earlier that day, and I was pleasantly surprised to see thick fog rolling about just outside the building while on my way from the office to the lab.

2014 07 30 18 41 56Fog and a nice sunset. Well grant, fog hardly shows up in photos, but you can still see some of it, so that means its quite a lot of fog! And considering the weather here in tropical, sunny Singapore, yes, fog is a pretty rare occurrence and can only been seen after heavy rain over dense forested areas (and dense forested areas is too, rare in urban city Singapore).

2014 07 30 19 02 352014 07 30 19 02 56That’s the building where I’m working at. Now you can go stalk me! Hahaha. Well pardon the raindrops. I took the shot while in the car/bus.

2014 08 01 13 15 33KFC opened at NTU! And so I hopped on the free shuttle to eat some fried roosters last Friday. It was pure coincidence that they were giving out a free sjora (some brand of mango flavoured drink) with any purchase. A huge cup too at that. I was bloated, totally bloated. No more 3 piece chicken meal + cheese fries on my own again I swear! Just 2 pieces is enough for me.

2014 08 01 18 22 24Went to Jem that very same Friday cos my mum didn’t cook (and she had some engagement), so we went out for dinner. The traffic there was terrible. I reached the earliest, followed by my sis… and my dad? He reached, but was stuck in a jam trying to get into the car park! He tried the adjacent shopping centre but it was no different! He ended up waiting over a freaking hour to get into the shopping mall car park! Like seriously! He could have drove home, took the train out, and reached the mall long ago! (Maybe throw in a quick shower too.) He was so tired and pissed after that…. needless to say.

2014 08 01 18 23 54But anyway, while waiting for my sis to arrive… I shopped!

2014 08 01 18 28 13Sherlock manga part two! I bought the first book ‘a study in pink’ last year… and I was so excited to see the 2nd book come out! I wasn’t even expected a second book! I’ve still not watched any other episodes of this besides the first… but I will eventually find time to watch it… and read this manga too! I love this! The original drama is a fantastic modernised rendition of Sherlock, and this manga follows the drama really closely. Well at least the first book did so I’m assuming the same for the 2nd.

2014 08 01 18 29 45Saw this novel too, but I didn’t buy it. The movie cast went on VSA before (that’s how I knew about this movie), and I reviewed that episode so I remember it really well. Their childish squabbling and all! XD

2014 08 01 18 57 27Rurouni Kenshin! The novel adapted from the movie! I wanna watch this movie! The movie team went on VSA too and I just watched it yesterday… Together with the Nazodi, platinum data, kagi heya, suspect x, toto chan novels… so many novels that I’ve bought but I have no idea when I’ll be able to read them properly… arghs…!

2014 08 01 19 49 30So a random shot of the place we ate at that day. Super long queues EVERYWHERE on a Friday evening.

2014 08 01 20 18 20The karaage set that my sis ate… no photos of the rest though. But it was delicious!

2014 08 05 01 24 48And some snacks I got from muji that same day too...

Photos photos and more photos!

It’s been a long while since i posted here huh? I’ve been wanting to revive this blog for a while… so maybe, just maybe… there’ll be more posts to come hahaha.

So my sis came back from her month long vacation in Aussie on Friday. And I finished up work and joined my parents in fetching my sis at the airport. We went to Terminal 3 of the airport for dinner, ate at this French restaurant called Poulet - which means chicken. And boy was the chicken fabulous! Its called chicken for a reason and really, while the rest of the meat was great too, the chicken was the best hands down. I’m not gonna order any other meat but the chicken there next time XD It was superb!

2014 07 25 20 22 07The entrance of the restaurant. Which I actually took AFTER we finished the meal.

2014 07 25 18 57 34Ox tail!

2014 07 25 18 57 39Lamb shanks

2014 07 25 18 57 55Escargot! I loved the minced garlic + olive oil + tomato dressing. Is that called a dressing? Either way I loved it!

2014 07 25 18 58 00The half chicken in chardonnay sauce! That my mum cut up already XD It was really great. I love the creamy taste, and the taste is absolutely soaked into the chicken. Very tender too! 10/10!

2014 07 25 18 58 05Ahhhhh the mushroom soup. This was really great too. Mushroom soup and the chicken are a must!

2014 07 25 18 59 06Duck au vin. This… taste quite like our Chinese braised duck. It was good too, but I was disappointed that there wasn’t much taste of the vin (wine).

2014 07 25 20 02 30creame brulette

2014 07 25 20 07 55Tiramisu! Its huge and in a nice jar XD It’ll be super fattening if you eat this all by yourself? Hahaha. But I liked it.

2014 07 25 20 08 05

We took a short walk around Terminal 3 after that and I snapped a few pics.

2014 07 25 20 21 59

2014 07 25 20 31 292014 07 25 20 31 392014 07 25 20 31 42I must say… the Singapore airports are really nice. Well… we depend on tourism and transits for our economy after all...

2014 07 26 09 27 06I got my sis to buy tequila from the duty free shop! "智くん 一人でのむ酒テキーラって何それ” Oretachi no song, Satoshi-kun version. XD

A last photo… a drawing my sis did on a cloth bag!

2014 07 26 12 06 33And that’s all!
